Monday January 11th, 2011.

Thank you to all who participated in this year's Ice Bowl and TCL Club Champs! We raised $364 for charity and I appreicate everyone that came out this weekend.

Congrats to Andrew Bohme who took the Club Champ spot for the 4th time! Thank you to all the out of towners coming in to support the club, including Russell Thompson out of Phoenix who took 1st in Open Masters (and claimed a sweet ACE on hole 13) and Jonathan Gannon out of Sierra Vista who took 1st in the Intermediate division. Congrats as well to Tom Mulhall who took 1st in the Advanced division - thanks Tom for all you to do support disc golf in Southern Arizona! And thank you to all the new and renewing members who came out. I hope you all had a great time..

Please be sure to stay tuned to the website for updated information. I should have member lists, league schedules, meeting schedules, and more soon. The tourney page is up and will have an updated date for Cupid's Couples ASAP. As I mentioned at club champs, if you have anything you want to see in the website or just from the club in general, be sure to let me know.

This weekend's league is going to be run by Brent. The format for Sunday 9am league is doubles skip a hole. ACE pool is at $566 right now. Just a reminder that club members get half of the ace pool and non-members get a fourth, so if you haven't renewed yet for 2011, get those in cause I would hate to be the one that didn't get a full share of your winnings.

ICE BOWL AND CLUB CHAMPS INFO

First off, I hope you all had a great holiday season. I'm sorry for the delayed info but I was off in CA visiting family and didn't have any time for leisure on the computer. December flew by too fast as usual.

Ice Bowl returns to Sears Park (just south of Park Place Mall) on Saturday January 8th. Last year we raised over $900 cash for the food bank - that's a lot of food! Come out and help us set a new record. As always, unlimited "any shot mulligans" may be purchased for $1 each.

-"Day of" registration only.
-8:00 sign up
-8:30 mandatory player meeting
-9:00 shotgun start
-$15 per person all divisions
-2 total rounds

50% of entry fees go to the food bank and the other 50% goes to the payout. 100% of mulligan purchases go to the food bank. Please bring non-perishable food items to donate. However, cash is what they need the most because for every $1 donated the food bank can buy $8 worth of food! Hope to see you out there. And remember the Ice Bowl mantra, "No Wimps, No Whiners"!

2011 Club Championships are here. This event's purpose is to give back to the current members. Only 2011 current members can play. If you are current, it is FREE to play. To become current, first time members pay the $20 membership fee and receive $10 credit to the club store. Renewal memberships are $10 but no store credit. You can become a member or renew for 2011 at the event. This years event will take place at Santa Cruz River Park on Sunday January 9th. We will play one round of A's and then break for lunch, which will be provided, and then play a round of the B course. Support your local, regional, and national clubs, they are the backbone of the sport!

Thursday December 9th, 2010

Registration for The Southern Arizona Disc Golf Classic is almost closed! Spinners is accepting registrations until Thursday at close. Onling signup ends at noon on Friday. All registration ends at the start of doubles on Friday (3pm @ Santa Cruz). Sorry, no day of sign up! Hurry and contact Chris, see flyer here.

UPDATE! Tony Johnson will be providing lunch on both days. He will be making a quarter chicken, rice, and beans on Saturday, and then burgers and fries on Sunday when you come off the Marana layout. He's quite the cook and we appreciate him taking time away from his catering business to feed us! The suggested donation is $6.

Also, if you are not playing or have somebody with you that is not playing and want to volunteer to help, we are still in need of a couple people on Sunday.

We've got a great field of good people and quality players signed up already. If you haven't signed up yet, we'd love to have you come down to Tucson/Marana this weekend!

Check out this great video Chris put together of the Marana layout HERE

UPDATES!!!!

There has been a change to the Southern Arizona Disc Golf Classic schedule. Friday Doubles has been moved to the Santa Cruz "Classic"course. Unfortunately, after much consideration it was decided that there would not be enough daylight to get to experience the massive Marana Rock "Classic" course. Flyers have been adjusted and you can find the update here.

Also, since I'll be in Phoenix for the Cactus Champs this weekend, Daniel will be taking over for Sunday League. New format for the weekend is mystery golf so come out and see what the beautiful morning has in store.

Last but definitely not least is a big reminder about the Turkey Shoot on Saturday, November 27th.

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Lots of events coming up for Tucson so please stay posted! First off, Dave is hosting the 14th Annual Turkey Shoot. This is being held Saturday, November 27th. $15 for all divisions. Come out for some great par 2 golf. Check out the flyer here

I want to give a big thanks to everyone who participated in the events hosted by Jake this past weekend. The poker tournament and disc tournament brought in over $400 to his great cause. Stay tuned because we may have another poker tournament to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society soon to raise a bit more money before his marathon. The course we played on Saturday was a preview of Chris Kaufman's "Classic" layout at Marana and I must say we have an AWESOME tournament coming. Speaking of which, here's a message from Chris:

Hello!

I'm the TD of The Southern Arizona Disc Golf Classic. We have an exciting new format this year and I wanted to give you the details. I'm hoping that you'll all come out this December for some great golf in Tucson and Marana!

This year we are a B tier and it's also the very first event of the 2011 Cactus Series. We already have over $500 added cash for the pro purse. Big props to Ben Vosper for getting the cash flowing in!

I've been getting a ton of help and sponsorship already, from local TCL and MDGC board members right here in Tucson all the way to Savannah, Georgia, where Scott Dietrich is working on the caddie book for the tournament. Right after Scott finishes teaching his photo classes, he jumps on a plane to help run The Classic again. What a great community we have.

Here is this year's format --

Friday, December 10th, we have doubles, put on by James and the McCoys @ Marana Rock DGC. It will be played on the "Classic" layout that only the Pros and Advance Men will be playing on Sunday. James went all out last year to make doubles a very special event, and this year with the McCoys on board, it should be off the hook.

On Saturday, December 11th, the Pros and Advanced Men will be playing 2 rounds of a longer, more technical Santa Cruz course on Saturday. All other divisions will play a much shorter and faster version of this same course. Looks like we will have food catered to the course for lunch. The menu is being designed right now. We have all new baskets thanks to the Santa Cruz restoration project, and new improved conditions at the course. Thanks to Alan Brown for getting the City to fix up Santa Cruz

That evening we have a mini-golf event put on by Alan Brown at our host hotel - Tucson City Center/InnSuites. It's minutes from Santa Cruz, and they have several huge grass lawns, plus a bar, and an Olympic-sized pool. Hotel guests get a couple of free drinks and free breakfast in the AM. This hotel was a huge hit last year so it's great to have them on board again. Ask for the Southern Arizona Disc Golf Classic rate! (520) 622-3000. Also, don't forget to bring your mini baskets! Contact Alan for mini golf details.

On Sunday, December 12th, we have only one round with tee times at Marana DGC. Everyone except the Pros and ADV men will be playing the regular 18-hole course. When the last intermediate players tee off, the course will be switched to 18-hole Classic layout - Par 62.

These courses (especially Marana) were inspired by The Memorial layouts and my trip back east, playing Renny Gold, Maple Hill, Winthrop Gold and The IDGC courses. I loved all the variety of looks on those courses. Lots of risk/reward, technical shots, blind shots, and legitimate par 4 and 5 holes. I got together with Mike Anderson, the father of the Marana Rock DGC, and put together a course that utilizes all the best baskets and fairways, but adding length and more technical shots. There are 5 safari holes in the middle of this layout playing up against the Marana Rock Mountain. I've had lots of great input to help dial in this course and I think you will love it!

Why am I doing tee-times on Sunday? Well, the last two years we've been lucky enough to have some amazing top pros come out. But none of the ams were able to watch them, because everyone was playing at the same time. This year, as you finish up (if you're not on the top pro card) you'll be able to grab some food and a beer/soda, and watch the top cards come in. Also, we are working on having catered food ready when you come in from the course. If you don't want to do anymore walking, you can still watch the excitement unfold sitting at the headquarters at hole 1, watching the last three holes work their way through the valley below. Hole 18 is very dramatic 694 foot par 4: regular 18's tee pad, over White Crane lake to regular 1's basket. And if you're not under the basket on this hole, you've got a tough putt to finish the round. This hole is a great example of having an easy layup to play a safe 4, or if you really need to make up a stroke, you can try to clear the entire lake to take the birdie 3.

There will be a complete caddie book of every hole and course maps available for download soon! There will be no mystery holes, and most holes will be playable with the caddie book. Soon, I'll mark the few safari holes with objects in case you want to see them when the course is not up.

There has been a great turnout of PHX and Tucson golfers in the past, and I'd also love to see a bunch of Flagstaff golfers come down this time. It will be like playing summer golf in Flagstaff for you guys. Hope to see you out for all the events, and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. See disqman.com or tucsondiscgolf.com for more details and info!

Thank you all for coming to the recent open club meeting and for those of you who could not attend there are some big announcements to make. First off, Ben has decided that it is time to step down as club president effective January 2011. He has put in many years of hard work for disc golf in Arizona and is a great spokesman for the sport. He has indicated that he will still support the club with running leagues and tournaments and he’ll continue to enjoy any cold beer you hand him. Please thank him for his service to the club and community next time you see him.

Alan Brown has volunteered to step up to take Ben’s place and we are all excited to see where Tucson disc golf will go under his lead. Those of you that know Alan know that he brings a lot of great ideas to the table and there is always tons of passion behind everything he does. He will be officially voted in next month and take over the reins at the start of 2011.

Victoria is going to stay on the board and will help with webhosting and treasury roles. Stay tuned as we plan to get back up to date with league schedules, tournaments, and news.

We are looking for at least one more person to take an “officer” role in the club, so if you would like to take on a larger role in the club or have ideas for the club please contact one of the board members at league or by email

Registration for the Southern Arizona Disc Golf Classic has begun, so print up the flyer and get it to Chris or the club. Free up the weekend of December 11th and 12th and get your registration in now because it is going to be a great event for players of all skill levels. Get ready for the special "Classic" layouts. Also around the corner is the Turkey shoot on November 27th! Three rounds of par 2 golf on holes that everyone can reach. This is a great way to work off some of those calories from the Thanksgiving feast. Can you take home the turkey this year?

We have changed the Sunday league format to try to mix it up and bring out more people, we will still run handicapped A league the first Sunday of every month but the format will be different the rest of the weeks WITH THE ACE POOL STILL IN EFFECT:

10/17 – Alan – AB random draw doubles. Play odd holes from the A pad, even holes from the B pad.
10/24 – Lew – BA random draw doubles. Play odd holes from the B pad, even holes from the A pad.
10/31 – Ben – 666 random draw doubles. 6 holes of Best shot doubles, worst shot, and alternate shot.***LEAGUE MOVES TO 9AM!!
11/7 – Victoria – Handicapped A League.

Big News! This weekend we will be replacing the baskets at Santa Cruz. Show up on Sat and Sun ( Aug the 21st & 22nd) at 8 am to help with intallation! NOTE: The course will be closed for play during those days. The club will provide pizza and drinks for all volunteers. We will need as much as help as we can get, so come out and help us restore the course for future disc golfers. After all, people did the same for you over thirty years ago. Congrats to you, TCL, for making this possible!

League updates
1) Sunday Santa Cruz A is now at 8:00 am
2) Saturday Marana is now at 7:00 am
3) There is a new friday handicapped league at Marana on Fridays at 5:30 pm

Hello disc golf fans, we've got a change of venue for the next open club meeting on Wednesday July 7th at 7:00pm! We will be meeting at Zachary's Pizza on 6th street near the UofA just east of Park ave. We will be voting on the type of basket to get for Santa Cruz: DiscCatchers, Mach V, maybe Chainstar (based on funding). Your sponsorship or small donation could be the difference in getting what you want versus what we can afford! Hope to see you at ZACHARY'S PIZZA!

The heat is here and league times are getting earlier to compensate. Sunday Santa Cruz A league is now at 8:00am and the ace pool is at $700 and climbining!!! The metal count increases every week but still no ace… there is still opportunity to make your 1st or 50th ace a big payout so come out and run it. 50% payout to club members, 25% to non-members.

Saturday Marana Doubles has also moved to 7:00am to beat the heat. There is a new addition to the league schedule with Marana Handicapped Singles at 5:30pm on Fridays.

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Lemon Drop is Postponed until July 31st and Aug 1st! Too much snow on the mountain to run as scheduled, watch your facebook account, this website, or www.disqman.com for the latest info.

Santa Cruz Restoration Project (SCRP) has been revitalized! We have a new sponsor flier out and we are looking to get at least 9 baskets ordered by the middle of June! If you want to get 2/3/4 people together to sponsor a basket we will take it. If you just want to give $1-$20 bucks we will take it. Count the number of times the basket doesn't catch over the next couple of weeks and throw in a buck for each time. You can use the paypal link to the left of your screen, or drop by a local league and give the money to the TD. We are closing in on 9 baskets but the larger goal is a full 18 so please dig deep to find those penny's between the cushions... For only $400 this is great advertising for your business (or ego): Your logo and a link to your website will be on our website, all disc golfers that play the course will see your logo on your hole, as well as many other great perks.

Tuesday B league is now at 5:30pm so make your way to the eastside after work for a little Disc Golf!

Victoria is trying to start a "Women's Only League" at the same time as Sunday Santa Cruz A league. Please contact club officers if interested.

Santa Cruz Ace pool is closing in on $500 so come out on Sunday and hit an ace and sponsor a basket!

Thank You Dave and Byron for putting on the Nostalgia Day tournament, and congrats to Jacob for pulling off the win after a great 9 under on the B course!

Marana Disc Golf Club announces their Sizzlin’ Saturday Summer Series 2010! This is a fundraising series of 3 one-day events at Marana Rock Disc Golf Course to raise money to replace the deteriorating baskets at the Santa Cruz River Park Disc Golf Course. Dates of the Series are: Saturday, June 12; Saturday, July 10; and Saturday, August 14. Format: Random Draw Doubles (The Series will take the place of the Marana Disc Golf Club’s usual Saturday morning random draw doubles league on these days). The Series will include lots of fun side items, including MULLIGANS! The course layout will be different, and challenging, for each Series event! See the flyer for more details
